sybe medicalWhile looking at the Koss HB70 Infrared Stereophones we found several positive aspects as well as a number of drawbacks. The TV headphones are among the top 10 best infrared headphones because they have a decent signal which will carry the audio approximately 20 feet, allowing you to have some distance between you and the transmitter. There is a slight hissing or static noise that we weren’t able to stop, and in our research we found that other users had the same problem. They can be used for home entertainment with a television or a computer as well as in-vehicle entertainment making them extremely versatile and a better option for some users.

Comparable to many other infrared headphones, the Koss HB70 Infrared Headphones work best when within 20 feet of the transmitter. You do need to keep a line of site between the headphones and the transmitter; however, there is an effective area which allows you to move 45 degrees to the right and to the left of the transmitter without losing the signal. As we mentioned above, there is a hissing noise that the headphones make when they are on and we were unable to figure out how to stop it. The hiss affected the ranking of the TV headphones because the overall audio quality is less than we initially thought.

These Koss HB70 Infrared Headphones are very unique in their design. They are the only infrared headphones we reviewed with a head strap that goes behind the head instead of on top. Our main worry with this is that the headphones would get in the way or push on the head awkwardly when your head is resting against something. If you are going to be sitting up at a computer while using the headphones, they may be a better choice. However, many users did mention that they found the headphones uncomfortable and not ideal for relaxing and watching TV.

In the top right-hand corner of the Koss website you will find a Contact Us link. The link takes you to a page where you can contact Koss through an online form. You can also view warranty and repair information for the lifetime warranty they provide on their infrared headphones. The Koss customer support team responded to our emails a few weeks after the initial inquiry, so it’s a somewhat slow process. They also offer customer service and technical support through chat and a toll free phone number. Through each of these we were able to get in touch with a representative rather quickly and were able to get each of our questions addressed.

Summary

We were not as impressed with the Koss HB70 Infrared Stereophones as we were with other options. They are lacking in the quality and design that most infrared headphones excel in. They are very versatile and some users were able to tune out the static and enjoy the product. However, we suggest looking at the side-by-side comparison of the top infrared TV headphones before making your final decision.

sybe medicalA great alternative to the more expensive infrared headphones, the Power Acoustik Wireless Infrared Headphones are a simple solution to your audio needs. These TV headphones do not come with a transmitter and must be used with a compatible infrared transmitter. They are very lightweight, which is great if you are purchasing them for kids. The audio quality isn’t as sharp as the top infrared headphones we reviewed, but they still deliver decent audio.

We were pleased that these infrared headphones come with an automatic shutdown feature that will automatically turn the headphones off once the infrared signal or audio is lost. They shut down within five minutes of losing the signal, and although that isn’t as quick as some of the other TV headphones we reviewed, it will still save you a lot of battery power in the long run. They also have a personal volume control on the headphones so each user can adjust the volume to a comfortable level.

As we mentioned above, the headphones do not come with a transmitter. They are compatible with most in-vehicle transmitters and are capable of receiving an infrared signal up to 30 feet. They are standard stereo headphones and lack the surround sound that some users prefer. The audio comes in clear when you are within the effective range, and we had no problems with the reception unless we left the 30-foot range or lost sight of the transmitter, thus losing the infrared signal.

Power Acoustik’s WLHP-100 infrared headphones are lightweight and comfortable to wear. There isn’t anything special about their design that makes them stand out – they are made of plastic, the band goes over your head and the ear pads lie on top of your ears. The head strap is adjustable to fit a child or an adult. Through our research we found them to be functional and comfortable for a variety of people.
One thing we disliked about the headphones is that they are designed specifically for in-vehicle entertainment systems but they don’t come with a carrying case. While a carrying case would probably make the cost slightly higher, we feel it would be beneficial for the added protection. None of the users we found had a problem with them being too flimsy or breaking; however, those who purchased the headphones for their children did say the case would be convenient for traveling.

Power Acoustik offers very little information on their website. We weren’t able to locate a product page specifically for the WLHP-100 infrared headphones; however, we were able to find a page for all of the wireless headphones. This page has information on six different pairs of wireless headphones and the main features of each. A little more in-depth information would be very helpful, especially regarding which transmitters are compatible with the headphones.

At the top of the site is a support link and a contact link for additional information on Power Acoustik products. We searched for an owner’s manual as well as additional information for the WLHP-100 infrared headphones and were unable to find any. Through the contact link we found a phone number and several email addresses for different departments: technical support, warranty and repairs, parts and sales. We sent an email to the technical support address listed and after nearly a month, still have not received a response. We also called the phone number, and after being transferred to the technical support department we left a message and did receive a phone call the same day. The representative was helpful and was willing to speak with us until all our inquiries were addressed. Although they aren’t as focused on customer support as we think they should be, they are willing to work with you. However, we recommend contacting them by phone if you actually want to receive a response.

Summary

While these infrared headphones are not in the top five products, they are still among the top 10 best infrared headphones available. They don’t offer the greatest quality we found, but they provide a clear sound as long as you stay within the effective area. Their customer support team was average – they didn’t respond to our emails but returned our phone calls and addressed each of our questions. If you want higher quality, a larger effective area and wider effective degree, and a product that comes with its own transmitter, we suggest you look at some of the other products listed on our side-by-side comparison. But if you don’t need an extra transmitter and if the specs of these Power Acoustik Wireless Infrared Headphones meet your needs, this might be a good inexpensive pair to look into.

sybe medicalThe Koss HB79 Infrared Stereophone work fine, but they’re not one of the infrared headphones that we highly recommend. These TV headphones, like some of the other infrared headphones, are very versatile. They are compatible with home entertainment systems, in-vehicle entertainment systems and with your personal computer. These headphones have a higher audio quality than many choices, placing them among the top 10 infrared headphones, but they also have a few design aspects that hold them back from ranking higher.

With the Koss HB79 Infrared Headphones you will receive one headset and one transmitter. The transmitter and the headset are versatile and can be used with a number of entertainment systems, including your television, computer and in-vehicle entertainment systems. While you can use it in a number of places, the headphones must be kept within approximately 20 feet of the transmitter or you will lose the audio connection. Like all infrared products, you must also keep a line of site in order to keep the signal. Ducking behind a wall, the couch or any other object will obstruct the signal and cause you to lose the audio. We found that the audio works well as long as it is kept within the effective range.

One important feature omission we should mention is that the Koss HB79 Infrared Headphones do not provide an automatic shutdown feature. They must be manually turned off when you are finished using them, otherwise the battery life will continue to drain. There is a personal volume control on the headphones, which is convenient and allows you to easily adjust the volume to your personal preference.

The headphones are powered with two AAA batteries and will run for approximately 45 hours. The battery compartment is located on the circular portion of the headphones, opposite the ear pad. Through our research we learned that many users had difficulty opening the battery compartment to replace their old batteries. You can use disposable batteries or rechargeable batteries, depending on your preference; however, we recommend selecting the batteries that keep their charge the longest so you don’t have to go through the trouble of opening the compartment door more often than necessary.

While we were able to get in touch with Koss through the toll-free phone number we found on their website, they have yet to respond to our emails. We suggest contacting them over the phone for any information or help you may require because it gives you a better chance of getting your questions addressed. Their website gives some product information but it is very minimal. The headphones come with a limited lifetime warranty, which is a great benefit to have with any electronic device.

While we were able to get in touch with Koss through the toll-free phone number rather quickly, we found that they are slow to respond to emails. Summary

Overall, we felt that the Koss HB79 Infrared Stereophone should be included in the top 10 infrared headphone choices. Again, we feel it’s worth mentioning that the headphones are versatile and can be used in a number of locations. The transmitter will connect to a number of entertainment systems through a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the headphones only require two AAA batteries. There is no automatic shutdown feature and the battery compartment door is hard to open, but if you can get past these aspects, you may find that these headphones have everything you’re searching for.

sybe medicalWhile the Audiovox Wireless Headphones are durable and produce clear audio, they are very limited in their ability and only work with designated Audiovox DVD players. The DVD players have a transmitter which sends the signal to the infrared headphones and provides audio. The headphones are for in-vehicle entertainment systems and have the smallest effective range of any infrared headphones we looked at. However, we selected them to be one of the top 10 best infrared headphones because during our research we found many users were extremely pleased with the audio and the design.

As we mentioned above, these TV headphones don’t come with a transmitter, like most infrared headphones do – instead they are sold separately. They are compatible with many of the Audiovox overhead DVD players that you can have professionally wired into your car. Once you have the DVD player or infrared transmitter hooked up to your vehicle, you will be able to use multiple pairs of the IRHSCS Wireless Headphones to receive the audio.

Because they were designed for in-vehicle entertainment systems, the effective range is only 10 feet. While this doesn’t seem like much compared to many other infrared headphone products, it is all most people will need within their vehicle. The infrared signal has an effective degree of 90 degrees. This means you can be angled 45 degrees to the right or left of the transmitter and the audio will still come in clearly.. The infrared receivers are in each of the earpieces so the headphones don’t have to be in a completely straight line with the infrared signal to receive the audio; those who sit on the right side of the vehicle, or the left, can also receive the signal.

These infrared headphones do have an automatic shutoff feature which will turn the headphones off after three minutes without an audio signal. Each pair of headphones also comes with personal volume control and a power switch.

Like other infrared headphones, the IRHSCS Wireless Headphones run on two AAA batteries. They are made of plastic, and while they have a soft, flexible design that makes them comfortable for wearing, they are more durable than many infrared headphones and can handle most of the beating that comes from travel. The headphone strap goes on top of your head instead of running behind, and the design of the earpieces seems to seal your ear from outside noise. We were thrilled with the fit and feel of the ear pads; however, they aren’t replaceable so we don’t think they are the most kid-friendly.

On the Audiovox product page for the IRHSCS Wireless Headphones you can access FAQs, the owner’s manual, a product registration link and the warranty card. All of these are simple to access and very helpful in providing product information. Contacting the Audiovox customer support team is not as simple, however. In the bottom-left corner of the website is a Contact Us link. You may have to look close because it’s a light grey text link that almost disappears against the white background of the site.

The Contact Us page gives you several different options, allowing you to pull product FAQs, contact Audiovox and access general contact information. To send an email, you must create an account with Audiovox and fill out a form. It was simple, but a little more time consuming than simply sending an email. We also found a toll-free phone number that we called, and after a 15-minute wait, we were told that we needed to call a different number. The wait wasn’t nearly as long, but the customer support representative was hurried and didn’t answer some of our questions. While we believe that Audiovox will provide mostly adequate support, and will stand by their warranty, they aren’t the easiest to work with.

Summary

Overall, we felt like the Audiovox Wireless Headphones work well and offer a comfortable, durable design. It’s important to note that they are only compatible with an Audiovox in-vehicle entertainment system, which doesn’t fit every user’s need. If this is what you are looking for, we believe you will be very pleased with both the audio quality and the comfort of these headphones.

sybe medicalAs one of the top choices for in-vehicle entertainment systems, we found the Power Acoustik Wireless Headphones with Transmitter a great choice to include among the best infrared headphones. This product comes with two pairs of infrared headphones as well as a transmitter and handy storage cases. One problem we did find is that the headphones are slightly too large for most children under five years old. While the headphones are standard stereo quality and will not impress the audiophile, they provide a crisp and clear audio that most users will not find a problem with.

The fact that they are designed for in-vehicle entertainment systems will push some users away; however, we found that the majority of infrared headphone users are purchasing them for their vehicles. This product comes with a transmitter and two headphones. The transmitter has an open power supply which is designed to be hardwired to your vehicle. The effective range is much larger than most family-size vehicles and extends to 30 feet. You can move within a 180-degree angle away from the transmitter’s signal and the headphones receivers will continue to pick up on the audio signal.

We were thrilled that the headphones have individual volume control for comfort, and an automatic shutdown feature, power switch and mute function all for prolonging battery life. As we mentioned above, the audio will be relayed through the headphones as standard stereo quality and doesn’t provide surround sound. While we found the quality to be crisp and clear, many audiophiles will want a larger audio frequency range and greater definition.

These TV headphones have a unique feature that we didn’t find in any other infrared headphones – swivel ear pads. While the swivel ear pads don’t add anything to audio quality, they definitely change the design. The swivel design allows you to lay the headphones flat for better storage or to wear around your neck when you’re not using them. You can also turn the ear pads outward, turn up the volume and use the headphones as speakers. These headphones do come with a convenient carrying case, which makes them easy and convenient to travel with.

We weren’t able to find very much information on the Power Acoustik HP-22IRT wireless headphones on their site. We tried contacting technical support through email and have yet to receive a response. We were able to get a hold of them over the phone, and although they don’t provide a toll-free phone number, we recommend calling them if you have any inquiries or would like to talk to a representative.

Summary

We were impressed with the Power Acoustik Wireless Headphones with Transmitter. These headphones come with a transmitter that is only designed to be hardwired into your vehicle. That means if you are looking for an option that is versatile and easy to move around, this is not the best choice for you. They have a unique design that, while too large for some children, is comfortable and easy to travel with. The sound quality is clear and understandable but does not reach the high quality that most audiophiles look for. We recommend these for users who are looking for a basic product that they can use and conveniently store in their vehicle for traveling.

sybe medicalCapping off the top five infrared headphones are Pyle Wireless IR Mobile Video Stereo Headphones. We really enjoyed the ear cushions because they provide more of a noise-canceling effect. Depending on the volume you personally set, you will still be able to hear people talk to you, but you won’t hear the majority of the outside noise. The TV headphones don’t offer the greatest frequency response so you won’t get the greatest range of sound. However, these infrared headphones are easy to configure and offer decent audio, free of static, and a comfortable design.

Features

Pyle’s PLVWH5 Wireless Stereo Headphones are designed specifically for in-vehicle entertainment. The TV headphones do not come with a transmitter of their own and will only work with TV screens that have a compatible built-in transmitter. While this is a great benefit for users who want infrared headphones solely for in-vehicle use, it is a setback for users who want infrared headphones for home entertainment.

We found that while the specifications state the effective range is 26 feet, the headphones provide the best quality when used approximately 20 feet or less from the transmitter. They have a 90-degree effective area, allowing you to keep the signal while moving 45-degrees to the left and 45-degrees to the right of the transmitter. They have a personal volume control for additional comfort and an automatic shutdown feature which will turn the headphones off once the audio signal has been lost to preserve battery life. The transmitter and the headphones were easy to set up and very convenient and comfortable to use.

Design

The Pyle PLVWH5 Wireless Stereo Headphones have an ear cup design. The design has an elevated padded circle surrounding the ear piece which covers your ear for a noise-cancelling effect. Through our research we found that many users prefer this design for the additional sound quality and comfort it provides.

Through our research we found that users were pleased with the comfort of the TV headphones. We found the ear cups very impressive and were also pleased with the quality and design. The headphones go over the head, instead of behind, and can be adjusted to fit a child or an adult. Because they are built for in-vehicle entertainment, we would have liked to see a carrying case, but the headphones don’t come with one.

Help & Support

While their online product documentation is limited, Pyle does offer a few resources for customer help and support. Through their website you can find a product page built specifically for the PLVWH5 Wireless Stereo Headphones. The page offers product specifications, a product description and the owner’s manual. While the information is limited, it will give you some idea of what you can expect from the product. The owner’s manual offers half a page of specifications: carrier frequency, power requirements, distortion, frequency response, power supply and a diagram of the infrared effective range. It was clean and organized but didn’t provide the amount of information that we expected to find, which was somewhat disappointing.

Also on their website is a Contact Us link. After clicking on the link you will be able to contact Pyle Audio Inc. via a toll-free phone number, a fax number or an email address. We called them multiple times and experienced wait times as short as five minutes and occasionally as long as 15 minutes. While the wait time was at times fairly long, we were appreciative of their knowledge and polite employees. The representatives were able to answer all of our questions, and they were willing to talk to us until we were confident that we no longer had additional questions. However, despite our positive experiences talking with Pyle on the phone, we sent them an email and after a week had still not received a response.

Summary

While Pyle produces excellent products, you want to make sure the infrared headphones you choose provide the design features you want. These infrared TV headphones do not come with a transmitter but can be used with a TV as long as your TV has a compatible built-in transmitter. They offer a comfortable fit, a solid audio connection within the approved range and a decent battery life, plus battery saving capabilities. While they are not as versatile as some other infrared headphones, Pyle Wireless IR Mobile Video Stereo Headphones are excellent for in-vehicle entertainment use.

sybe medicalThe Boss HS-IR Wireless Infrared Headphones are among today’s top infrared headphones because of the audio quality, comfortable design and battery life. These TV headphones are designed for in-vehicle entertainment and have a shorter effective range than most infrared headphones designed for home entertainment. While there is no surround sound, we found the audio quality very impressive and clear. Also, through our research we found that users enjoyed the design of the headphones and the comfortable over-the-ear fit. In addition to those great features, the headphones consume minimal power and have better battery life than most competing products. Overall, these infrared headphones have several beneficial qualities in each of our ranked criteria.

Features

This set of Boss infrared headphones comes with two headphones and a single transmitter. Each of the headphones has a receiver on each ear cup. This will allow you to move 45 degrees to the right and to the left away from the transmitter’s signal. As with all infrared products, you need to keep a line of sight with the transmitter or else you will lose the audio. You can move approximately 15 feet away from the transmitter and the signal will still be strong enough to play clear sound, but as you move farther away, the audio will become less clear and you may lose it altogether.

We did appreciate the power switch and the personal volume control that comes on each pair of headphones. These features make the headphones convenient and comfortable for each individual user, allowing them to have the volume at a personal preference. These infrared headphones also have an automatic shutdown feature that will turn off the power if no signal or audio is detected for approximately five minutes. The automatic shutdown assists in preserving battery life.

Design

As mentioned above, these Boss infrared headphones have a low power consumption providing a long battery life. They receive power from two AAA batteries which will last for approximately 50 hours. You can use disposable or rechargeable batteries; however, be aware that each brand and type will provide a varied lifespan.

The impressive design of these TV headphones provided a great deal of comfort for each user. The head strap goes over your head, instead of behind, which we learned through our research most users find more comfortable because they enjoy relaxing their head and laying it back while watching TV. The ear cushions cup your ear instead of lying on top, which takes pressure off of your ears and allows you to wear them for longer. It also blocks more outside noise, which lets you focus on the audio coming through the headphones.

These infrared headphones are designed for vehicle use but can be used with your home entertainment system if you have a 12V AC adapter. They don’t have a carrying case, which we were disappointed about since they have been designed for traveling and in-vehicle use. The transmitter will need to be hardwired to your vehicle so the headphones are all you will need to keep track of.

Help & Support

We were not impressed with the Boss Audio Systems website. We were able to find the infrared headphones under their mobile video products to access the product page. The product page provides very little information; you will find an image of the product and a link to make a purchase. There is no product information or specifications on the product page, which we were disappointed about because we wanted to know the audio frequency response.

The warranty on Boss Audio Systems’ infrared headphones is one year from the date of purchase. To learn more about the warranty you can contact a Boss representative. To contact customer support we found an email address and phone number on their website. After a month, we still have not received a response to our email. We called the toll-free phone number that is also available on their site and we were able to speak with a representative in approximately five minutes. The customer support representative said that Boss Audio Systems does not test the frequency response and was unable to provide us with the information. The representatives that we spoke to were very helpful and friendly. In our research we found that people felt comfortable speaking with the representatives and found the customer support line a convenient and helpful option that they would use again if needed.

Summary

These Boss HS-IR Wireless Infrared Headphones are among the best infrared headphones we found. They have a sturdy and comfortable design that doesn’t weigh down your head, making you want to take them off before your movie has even ended. While the TV headphones don’t offer the effective range or degree that our higher-ranked products provide, they do come with all of the features we found most important to infrared headphones – an automatic shutdown feature, personal volume control and the ability to move around while still receiving the signal. They are among our top choices for infrared headphones, and if you are looking for in-vehicle infrared headphones, this may be a good option for you.

sybe medicalThe TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award for infrared headphones goes to the Pyle Dual Wireless IR Mobile Video Stereo Headphones w/ Transmitter. While these TV headphones have been designed specifically for in-vehicle entertainment systems, you can easily hook the transmitter up to your in-home entertainment system for the additional benefit of in-home use. These television headphones provide an effective range of 26 feet, which should allow you to move around your TV room without losing reception to the audio. We were pleased with the quality of the audio as well as the design features of these Pyle infrared headphones.

Features

Like other headphones in our lineup, you will find a power switch and a volume control on the headphones for personal use. We feel all infrared headphones should have a personal volume control for in-vehicle use as well as in-home use because if someone is talking to you, you can quickly adjust your personal volume as necessary. We really enjoy this feature, and while it isn’t necessary, it was convenient and makes the headphones slightly more enjoyable. Another great feature with these headphones is that they are sold in pairs. You will get one transmitter and two headphones in each package, a great benefit if you are planning on using them with more than one person at a time.

As we mentioned in the introduction, the infrared headphones have an effective range of approximately 26 feet. While not the highest, it is a comparable distance to other infrared headphones and offers a decent amount of room to move around. While you want to face the transmitter head-on to get the best signal, you can move slightly to the left and to the right. The headphones have been designed to provide a 45-degree leniency in each direction. As you exit the effective degree or the effective range you will begin to notice the audio fading. During our research we found that this often happened at approximately 15 feet.

A unique feature that these infrared headphones have is an auto-mute function. The auto-mute feature will automatically turn off the power amplifier and will mute when the transmitter connection is lost; this saves you from hearing extensive amounts of static. This will happen when the transmitter is shut off or when the headphones lose the infrared signal. After three to five minutes of no infrared connection, the automatic shutdown feature will kick in and the headphones will shut off. You can tell the difference between the auto-mute and the auto-shutdown features by looking at the power indicator lights. If the power indicator light is still on, then the headphones are on mute. If the power indicator lights are off, then the headphones have been turned off. These features help to prolong battery life and ensure that you get the best possible audio quality.

Design

The Pyle PLVWH6 Infrared Headphones run on two AAA batteries making it possible for you to use disposable or rechargeable. They have an adjustable head strap that will fit a child or an adult and is lightweight so you may forget that you are even wearing headphones. In our research we found that some users who wore them for an extended period of time got uncomfortable, though most users enjoyed the fit and the lightweight design. They are designed for in-vehicle entertainment, but if you purchase a transformer you can use them for in-home entertainment purposes. They are portable and easy to travel with, which is another great feature.

The headphones are made of plastic and are designed to go over your head as opposed to behind your head. The ear pads lie on top of your ears and don’t seal in the sound so you may hear some outside noise. This does come in handy when you are watching with another person and they want to talk to you.

Help & Support

We were very impressed with Pyle’s help and support resources. At the top of their site is a link to their contact information. The contact information includes a toll-free phone number as well as an email address. We were very impressed with their level of customer service and the help that we received from their representatives. When we called them, we were always connected to a representative within five minutes. The representatives were able to quickly find the information that we were seeking and made sure that all of our questions were answered. They were equally as efficient in responding to our emails and provided a response within 24 hours. Again, we were impressed with their organization and attention to detail as they answered each of our questions very effectively.

Through their website you can find a product page with specific information on the PLVWH6 infrared headphones. There are tabs for product details, videos, manuals and downloads, and reviews. While the tabbed areas for videos and reviews are empty, you can get product details and download the product manual. The manual is four pages and provides basic information on the headphones and the infrared effective range. The website was very clean and organized so we were able to find everything quickly.

Summary

We were impressed with several aspects of the Pyle Dual Wireless IR Mobile Video Stereo Headphones w/ Transmitter: the audio quality, the design, the versatility and the help and support. While they don’t have the largest frequency range, the audio comes out very clean and clear and with no interference. The volume and power controls on the headphones are very convenient and the automatic shutdown feature is a great way to extend the battery life. We were pleased with the infrared transmitter as well as the receivers in the headphones and feel that these are among the best infrared headphones available.

sybe medicalThe TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner for infrared headphones is the Sony Infrared Wireless Headphones. While these headphones don’t offer the effective range or effective-degree of our top product, they have their own strengths to flaunt. These headphones have the best frequency range in our lineup, which allows you to feel and hear a remarkable range of sound. Their battery life is also the longest that we found. We are impressed with these Sony infrared headphones, as you can see through their ranking, and believe that you will appreciate their versatility, sound quality and design.

Features

As we mentioned in the introduction, the Sony Infrared Wireless Headphones have the best frequency range of 18-22,000Hz. It’s the greatest frequency range that we found in a pair of infrared headphones. Infrared headphones typically produce the best audio quality you will find in wireless headphones because of the direct line of infrared light connecting the transmitter to the headphones. With that high-quality infrared audio and the large frequency response, we were very pleased with the audio quality.

The headphones have a power switch as well as a personal volume control. We feel this is a must-have feature not only for preserving battery life but also for comfort and convenience. With each user having a personal volume control, everyone can listen at their own comfort level. And it’s more convenient to just switch a dial at your ear than to find the TV remote or walk to the TV and manually change the settings.

These particular infrared TV headphones have an effective range of approximately 24 feet. You can move freely but must stay within a 90-degree angle of the transmitter at all times or else you will lose your connection. This gives you a 45-degree leeway to the right as well as to the left. These features are comparable to many other infrared headphones. Throughout the research that we performed on the Sony Infrared Wireless Headphones we learned that most users were pleased with the range of motion they had and were able to walk around their TV room without losing audio reception and without interference.

Design

Like many other infrared headphones, these are made of a hard plastic. They rest on top of your head instead of running behind it and are adjustable to fit a variety of head sizes. We found that adjusting sizes is very easy, which is important if a variety of people will be wearing the headphones. The ear cushions rest on your ears instead of cupping them, allowing you to hear what others are saying around you. The on-ear cushions aren’t necessarily better or worse than the over-ear cushions – it’s all personal preference and will largely depend on where you want to use the headphones. We found that many users enjoyed being able to hear the people around them while others had hoped to get more of a noise-canceling effect.

As you will find with all infrared headphones, you must keep the transmitter in your line of sight as long as you want audio. If you walk into a different room, you will lose your connection and no longer hear the audio. The transmitter cord is approximately 40 inches which will give you a decent amount of room for strategic placement, if required. The headphones weigh 4.4 ounces and are light so that they can rest on your head for an entire movie, or two, without causing discomfort or pain.

As we mentioned above, we were very impressed with the battery life of the Sony Infrared Wireless Headphones. The TV headphones come with a rechargeable NiMH battery pack but will also run on two AAA batteries. The battery life is the longest that we found and will last approximately 60 hours with the optional AA batteries or will last for 35 hours on the rechargeable NiHM battery alone. This was a huge benefit because you don’t have to worry about the headphones shutting off nearly as often and you don’t have to constantly be charging batteries or purchasing additional ones.

Help & Support

You will find that the help and support section is the area that Sony ranked the lowest. While their customer support team does provide adequate service, many of the users we spoke with weren’t pleased with the service they received. The Sony infrared headphones have a 90-day limited warranty, which is the shortest warranty that we found among the infrared headphones. While this disappointed us, we still believe that the headphones are one of the top choices because of their features, design and audio quality.

Our best suggestion for contacting Sony’s customer support department is to scroll to the bottom of the site, locate the toll-free telephone number and call them directly. It was the easiest way for us to speak with a customer support representative. Within two minutes of placing the call we were speaking with a representative, and this happened every time we called. The representatives were quickly able to access information regarding the TV headphones and answer each question or concern we posed. One positive aspect of Sony’s customer support department is they are open later than each of the other manufacturers we contacted, making it more convenient for you to contact them.

At the top and bottom of the site are links for technical or product support. Through the link for support you will find a chat option, an email option and more information on reaching customer support over the phone. Unfortunately, the chat option isn’t much help because it doesn’t work properly. Each of our reviewers was unsuccessful at using the chat feature, which is a disappointment because that is usually one of the most convenient ways to receive help and support.

After emailing Sony regarding the infrared headphones, we received a response within a couple of hours. This, we felt, was pretty efficient. The difficult part about emailing is that you can’t communicate back and forth quickly and will normally wait a couple hours between each message, which is why we recommend using the toll-free phone number. However, if your questions aren’t pressing, then we recommend email as an excellent way to contact the company.

Summary

As one of the top infrared headphone products on today’s market, Sony Infrared Wireless Headphones are a great choice. They offer the best frequency response we found in infrared headphones, they have all of the convenient features that make use simple and they have the longest battery life we found. We were pleased that they are easy to reach over the phone and via email and that their customer support department is open longer than other TV headphone manufacturers so you have a greater chance of getting a hold of someone when you need them. We believe that you will be impressed with the audio quality, the effective range, the design and the battery life of these infrared headphones.

sybe medicalAble Planet, the manufacturers of the True Fidelity Wireless Infrared Headphones, created a product that is hard to compete with. These TV headphones, excellent for your home entertainment system or in-vehicle entertainment system, produce excellent quality, have an intense feature set and one of the best designs for comfort and ease of use. As winner of the TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award in infrared headphones, we recommend these headphones because of their superior build and quality.

Features

We were very impressed by the feature set of these infrared headphones. They have a 45-foot effective range, which means the headphones will still pick up the infrared signal approximately 45 feet away from the transmitter. This is a great benefit when you are using the headphones with your home entertainment system and want to walk to the other side of your room. As long as there is a line of sight, you will get the same crisp, clear, high-quality audio that you get when you are right next to the transmitter. Again, the quality as well as the distance of the effective range impressed us about these television headphones.

One of the best features that we found in these headphones is the four receiving diodes. Unique to the True Fidelity Infrared Wireless Headphones, these diodes create a 360-degree effective area, which means that you can face any direction while wearing the headphones and still receive the infrared signal to hear the audio. Other TV headphone options give you a 90-degree effective area or a 180-degree effective area, but this is the only pair we found with a full 360-degree effective area. This is a huge benefit as one of the great features of wireless headphones such as these is that you can move freely without worry about pulling the cord out or getting tangled in something.

We feel the best infrared headphones must come with an automatic shut-off sensor. The sensor to these True Fidelity Wireless Infrared Headphones power the headphones off after 3.5 minutes of no signal or audio, which helps to preserve the battery life. The headphones also have an on/off power switch which allows you to manually power down and preserve battery life that way. We were also impressed to see that these headphones offer built-in surround sound for that true movie-watching experience.

Design

These infrared headphones run off of two AAA batteries. The battery life in the headphones will last approximately 50 hours, which is one of the longest lifetimes we found for infrared headphones. While the headphones come with disposable AAA batteries, you can also use rechargeable batteries if you’d prefer. The recharging time as well as the battery life will depend on which type of rechargeable batteries you purchase. As mentioned above, one of the features of these TV headphones is an automatic shut-off function that is designed to save battery life when you forget to shut them off.

Like other top TV headphones, the True Fidelity infrared headphones have an adjustable head strap and replaceable ear pads. The adjustable head strap makes the headphones a more comfortable fit for any size head – from a child’s to an adult’s – so they are never too tight or too loose. The replaceable ear pads are a great option because if they wear out you can replace them and continue using the headphones. The earphones sit on your ears and allow you to hear the people around you as well as the audio being transmitted to the headphones. While many people who use infrared headphones as TV headphones enjoy being able to hear others, some people prefer the noise-canceling headphones that completely cover your ear. We enjoyed the design, the fit, the frequency range and the clarity of these headphones.

Something else we liked about this product is that you can use it with your in-home entertainment system and your vehicle’s entertainment system. It is multi-functional and provides great sound wherever you are. In addition, the headphones come with a hard plastic case that makes them a great solution for travel.

Able Planet, the manufacturers of these infrared headphones, has a website that is easy to navigate, which is a huge benefit. The Contact Us link at the top of the webpage will take you to a page with company contact information such as a toll-free telephone number and an email address. We were very impressed with the Able Planet customer support representatives; they were very efficient and always responded to our email inquiries within a couple of hours.

In addition to responding quickly, they addressed each one of our questions in a very clear and concise manner. They were easy to understand and they seemed to have a great deal of knowledge on their products. Each set of headphones also comes with a comprehensive user manual to help you get acquainted with the design aspects as well as the features. While this product is easy enough to use without consulting the manual, it’s good to know there’s helpful documentation readily available in case you run into any questions about the features.
